Rose Angelica

Rose Angelica
MUSICIAN - EDUCATOR - FESTIVAL LEADER

As a musician, songwriter and teacher, Rose Angelica has experienced all facets of the music industry. She began playing guitar at the age of five and attributes much of her musical talent to her strong European roots. "I have performed with every band from polka bands to concert bands," Rose says. "I just love all types of music!"

Born a daughter of the late Albert and Joanna Gron of St. Petersburg, Fla., she grew up on a farm and loved to ride horses and listen to music. In fifth grade at Smithfield Elementary School, she took up the trumpet under the direction of J. Donald Cooper. In her early years at Smithfield High School, she was an accomplished musician and song writer and performed in the church choir, high school marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. She was also a member of the Girl Scouts.

She won the Aaron Award in her junior year and the John Philip Sousa Award as a senior. She also served as student director, which led to a music scholarship in 1973 at The Ohio State University, where she was a member of the world-famous Ohio State Marching Band, and traveled the United States with the Buckeyes and Coach Woody Hayes to the many Rose Bowl parades and games, as well as to the Orange Bowl her senior year. She was known as X-ROW-ROSE, a nickname she still carries today. She remains on its Board of Governors, performing with the OSU Alumni Band on a regular basis.

Rose received a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1977 and later a master’s degree in 1984 in music education. She was a graduate assistant with the OSU Military Band and Athletic Band and was a teaching assistant in the music education department, specializing in brass classes, marching band techniques and supervising student teachers.

Rose was Dr. Michael Mihalyo’s high school and college teacher and a classmate of Pandel Collaros at OSU.

She taught for 30 years in the Columbus Public Schools, Columbus Catholic Schools, Upper Arlington Schools, The Ohio State University, Buckeye Local Schools, Mingo High School, Indian Creek Schools, Jefferson Community College, Steubenville Catholic Schools and is a music consultant for Gerrero Music Store in Wheeling.

A private trumpet and guitar instructor for 32 years, Rose is also the bugler for the Steubenville American Legion and plays at many city events.

An OMEA judge for the State of Ohio, she judges many band contests nationally. She helps with summer band camps at Bethany College and at many high schools.

Since 1997 she has been chairman of the Dean Martin Festival in Steubenville. A wealth of enthusiasm for and knowledge of the legendary crooner, Rose has helped produce six Dean Martin documentaries and TV specials, as well as assisting his daughter Deana Martin with research for her book.

Rose's brother, Jack, is the chairman of the art department at Texas A & M in Corpus Christi, Texas.

She is married to Richard Angelica and resides in Mingo Junction. They have two sons, Richard and Christopher Angelica, who reside in Cincinnati.
