The Nutting family of Wheeling has been selected to receive this year’s Family Heritage Award in recognition of its long-term commitment to a legacy of service in the Upper Ohio Valley.
With an emphasis on quality local journalism, the Nutting family’s Ogden Newspapers publications have chronicled the news and sporting events in the region for more than 120 years.
In West Virginia, Ogden publishes locally The Intelligencer, the Wheeling News-Register and the Weirton Daily Times. In Ohio, the Ogden papers include The Review (East Liverpool), Morning Journal (Lisbon), Salem News, Herald-Star (Steubenville), Tribune Chronicle (Warren) and the Times-Leader (Belmont County).
In recent years the family’s interests have expanded in the tri-state region to include a majority interest in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania. Robert Nutting is president and chief executive officer of Ogden Newspapers, Inc., which publishes 40 daily newspapers in 11 states. Nutting also is chairman of the Pittsburgh Pirates, overseeing the complete overhaul of the operations and, as a result, dramatic improvement since assuming control of the club in 2007. In addition, he serves as chairman of Pirates Charities, the official philanthropic arm of the Pirates, whose mission is to make a tangible impact in the community with a focus on youth health, fitness and education. He is the incoming president of the Newspaper Association of America, vice chairman of the Nature Conservancy of West Virginia and chairman of the board of The Linsly School in Wheeling.
William Nutting is vice president of Ogden Newspapers, Inc. He also serves as president of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and is a director of the Associated Press. He serves on the Board of Governors of West Virginia University, the executive committee of the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley and the board of Security National Trust Co.
G. Ogden Nutting is publisher of the Ogden Newspapers Inc. Nutting is a recipient of the West Virginia Press Association's Adam R. Kelly Premier Journalist Award and is an honorary “Life Member” of the association. A director of the Wheeling Park Commission, Nutting served for 20 years on the board of the WVU Foundation and has received numerous awards from West Virginia University, including the Order of Vandalia.
Ogden Newspapers and the Nutting family also created the West Virginia University Journalism Library Endowment Fund, the Ogden Newspapers Seminar Series, the Ogden Newspapers Multimedia Classroom and the Ogden Newspapers Endowed Visiting Professorship.
