Jim Render – a former East Liverpool High School assistant football coach from 1965 to 1967 – currently coaches at Pittsburgh’s Upper St. Clair High School, where he has won five WPIAL football championships and reached the state finals four times, winning twice.

He has won more games than any high school football coach in Western Pennsylvania history with a current record of 364-113-5 in 42 years of coaching.

A 1960 graduate of Dover High School, he was captain of the football team and an All-Ohio quarterback in 1959. He began his college education at Northwestern University, later transferring to Wittenberg University, where he was graduated in 1964. While there he was a member of the 1962 and 1963 National Championship football teams and set school and Ohio Conference records as a place-kicker.

His coaching career began at Stanton Local High School and was further developed at East Liverpool High School under the late Bob McNea.

In the late ’60s he earned a Master’s Degree in Administration at West Virginia University while serving as assistant football coach. That was followed by his first head coaching job in Carrollton. He then coached for seven years at Uniontown, Pa., closing with a championship season.

More championship seasons were to follow at Upper St. Clair, where he has been since 1979 – more, in fact, than any other Western PA high school football coach.

He serves on the PSFCA Board of Directors and is actively involved in several projects with the BIG 33 Football Classic.

He has been inducted in both the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Hall of Fame (1998) and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (2005).

He and his wife, Pamela Jo, are the parents of two sons and have two grandchildren.
